Championing Lasting Change for Young People

7th September 2023 | Prince’s Trust

Young people’s charity The Prince’s Trust and The Denholm Group have formally renewed their partnership affirming an ongoing commitment to create lasting positive change for young people, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Denholm Group has partnered with The Prince’s Trust since 2019.  During that time, Denholm has contributed over £100,000 to support young people via company donations and staff fundraising, as well as providing career insights for school children as a host for The Prince’s Trust ‘World of Work’ events.

Operating in shipping, logistics, seafoods and industrial services and in over 50 locations across the UK, Denholm is a prominent employer in many local communities.  The Group supports young people by offering apprenticeships, which combine work experience and on-the-job training with studying towards a formal qualification.  Extending its patronage of The Prince’s Trust confirms the importance Denholm places on helping young people develop the skills they need for a fulfilling career.

Ben MacLehose, CEO of The Denholm Group, commented, “Renewing our patronage of The Prince’s Trust is the natural step forward for The Denholm Group.  Since becoming a patron in 2019, it has been wonderful to witness the growing involvement of Denholm employees in the charity, including their participation in the Trust’s annual fundraising challenge, ‘Future Steps’.  Listening to Young Ambassadors explain first-hand how The Prince’s Trust helped them overcome major life challenges has been particularly heartening.  I look forward to hearing many more inspiring stories of how the Prince’s Trust has helped support young people to achieve their goals.”

Tom Keer, Interim Director of Corporate Partnerships said: “We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Denholm and grateful for their commitment to The Prince’s Trust, which helps to inspire, empower and nurture young people on our programmes to secure a better future for themselves. Young people are currently facing multiple challenges and this ongoing support will help to increase their confidence and build the skills they need to reach their full potential.”

Renewal of the partnership was formally recognised at an event on 5th September at The Prince’s Trust’s Centre in Manchester.

Youth charity The Prince’s Trust and Liverpool-based business Denholm Logistics Group last week organised a ‘World of Work’ day for pupils of Calderstones School in the Allerton area of Liverpool.

Hosted by a patron of The Prince’s Trust, ‘World of Work’ days are designed to give students an insight into a business, its sector and career pathways, to raise the aspirations of young people, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Employees at Liverpool-based Denholm Logistics Group designed and hosted an interactive workshop for twelve 12 and 13-year-old students of Calderstones School.  The students were able to track a simulated shipping container from the Far East into a UK port and onward to a Denholm warehouse via inland haulage.  The workshop also gave the pupils the opportunity to learn about freight forwarding, port agency, transportation and warehousing activities, using the latest technology deployed by Denholm.

Niall Denholm, Managing Director of Denholm Logistics Group, said: “Denholm Logistics Group is a proud supporter of The Prince’s Trust.  Being headquartered in Liverpool and with facilities across Merseyside and throughout the UK, we are keen to encourage and inspire young people in our local communities.  Young people have the opportunity to develop an exciting career in logistics and maritime services and our ‘World of Work’ tour has been a great way of introducing pupils of Calderstones School to the various options open to them within our industries.”

Jo McKnight, Head of Operations for The Prince’s Trust in Merseyside, said: “We are delighted to have partnered with Denholm Logistics Group for this ‘World of Work’ day. The workshop allowed pupils to learn about local industries first-hand and encouraged them to think about what careers could suit them in the future.”

Denholm Logistics Group is a division of diversified family-owned business The Denholm Group, which announced a new partnership with The Prince’s Trust in 2019 that is designed to create lasting change for young people.

Denholm Recognises a ‘Rising Star’

2nd October 2019 | Prince’s Trust

Young people’s charity The Prince’s Trust recognised the achievements of young people in Scotland last night at an awards ceremony in Edinburgh, and The Denholm Group was proud to play its part by sponsoring the ‘Rising Star’ award.

The Prince’s Trust Awards acknowledge the outstanding achievements of young people who have overcome great difficulties and barriers in order to transform their lives in areas including education, skills development, employment, enterprise and community.

Actor and radio presenter Grant Stott hosted the 2019 Regional Prince’s Trust Awards in Scotland at a ceremony at the Assembly Roxy in Edinburgh on Tuesday. As a new patron of The Prince’s Trust, The
Denholm Group sponsored the ‘Rising Star’ award, which recognises young people who have overcome such difficulties and barriers and are in sustainable employment.

This year’s ‘Rising Star’ award in Scotland was presented to David Bruce. Finding a passion for cooking he did not realise he had, David overcame severe drug-related mental health issues and unemployment to focus on becoming a professional chef.

David Bruce said: “My mental health can still be brittle but I have much more confidence and resilience and I know when to tap into support services. I also have ambition for the first time in a long time. Doing the course at Tennent’s [Training Academy], getting the job and applying for college did feel daunting but exciting at the same time. I love learning and working with food and my future, which once seemed bleak, is now full of possibilities.”

Presenting the award, Ben MacLehose, Group Managing Director at The Denholm Group, said: “We wanted to form a partnership with The Prince’s Trust in order to help young people build their confidence and gain the skills they need to thrive in work, therefore giving them a future. David is an example of a young man who has achieved this after overcoming real challenges and barriers. He is an inspiration to all of us, and a reminder that with resilience, determination and commitment you can change your life and do great things. David is definitely a ‘Rising Star’ and a truly deserving winner of the Award.”

In the past year, The Prince’s Trust has empowered over 68,000 young people throughout the UK to take control of their futures. The Prince’s Trust Awards series recognises some of these greatest achievements at ten regional ceremonies that culminate in a star-studded national final in London in early 2020.

Young people’s charity The Prince’s Trust and diversified family-owned business The Denholm Group have announced a new partnership designed to create lasting change for young people.

The Denholm Group has confirmed its commitment to supporting young people by becoming a patron of The Prince’s Trust and is encouraging its employees to take part in fundraising activities to support The Trust’s work of creating brighter futures for young people, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Partnering with The Prince’s Trust also provides volunteering opportunities for employees at Denholm. As well as helping young people to develop their skills and raise their aspirations, volunteering with The Trust will give Denholm employees the opportunity to gain new skills and to challenge themselves beyond their regular job responsibilities.

The Denholm Group is head-quartered in Glasgow, and the locations of its offices and sites throughout the UK complement the network of Prince’s Trust Centres. Denholm also operates in areas that do not currently have a local Prince’s Trust Centre, but in which the Trust is extending its reach by working with schools, colleges and other partners.

John Denholm, Chairman and CEO of The Denholm Group, said: “Our partnership with The Prince’s Trust marks the first time Denholm has nominated a Group-wide charity partner. The Group has been expanding through organic growth and acquisition, and with 50 offices and over 1,000 employees across the UK, it now feels appropriate to partner with a UK charity that gives all our employees similar opportunities to support young people in their local communities.”

Mr. Denholm continues: “The Group currently supports a number of young people through apprenticeships, which combine work experience or on-the-job training with studying towards a formal qualification. Our partnership with The Prince’s Trust is the natural next step in supporting many more young people by helping them to build their confidence and gain the skills they need to thrive in the world of work.”

Kate Still, Director, The Prince’s Trust Scotland said: “It is essential that we do everything we can to ensure young people have an increasing stake in our economy and society. We do this by improving their confidence, boosting their skills and ensuring they have the knowledge of potential career paths. The private sector plays a key role in offering young people in our country real opportunities so they can live, learn and earn. By establishing relationships with corporate partners, we can ensure that all young people who need help receive it. That’s why we are delighted that The Denholm Group has become a patron of The Prince’s Trust.

“By working closely with Denholm and, with their support and commitment, we will make a real difference and transform the lives of many young people. Together we will support and empower young people to build a better future for themselves, their communities and our country as a whole.”

Formation of the partnership was formally recognised at an event on Tuesday at The Prince’s Trust’s Wolfson Centre in Glasgow.
